Abstract
The paper presents detailed information on the introduction of cellular radio in the United Kingdom. The selection of the system employed is considered along with the development of the associated standards against a background of competition and liberalisation of telecommunications policy in the UK. Other important aspects such as the provision of hand portable subscriber units, the role of the network operator and the future of cellular radio in the UK and Europe are also considered.
