End-of-train monitor system for caboose elimination

Application of end-of-train monitor systems to replace cabooses on North American railroads is described. Emphasis is placed upon the communications aspects of applying a reliable radio telemetry link from the rear of the train to the locomotive. Union Switch and Signal´s experience during development of it´s Trail Guard^TMsystem, which is now in service on several North American railroads, serves as the basis for the paper.
