Abstract :
This paper presents the results of an RF propagation measurement series at 820 MHz in an urban environment to investigate the relative performance of omni and directional antennas. Simultaneous measurements taken from the co-located omni and directional antennas were analyzed to study the relative performances of these antennas in a heavily built-up urban area. Relative antenna gains measured at the antennas test range were compared against the measurement data from the multipath urban environment. Directional antenna front-to-back lobe ratios were also compared as a function of distance between the mobile and the cell site. Standard deviation of the short term averaged signals for both omni and directional antennas were also compared as a function of distance between the mobile and the cell site.
