Abstract
This paper proposes new dimensioning methods in an MP/WDM (multi-protocols over WDM) network with static wavelength paths. The network has the following aspects: (1) limited to the near future, the network uses costly OXCs (optical cross-connects) only to replace active paths in the spare paths when a fault occurs, and, (2) every active path does not produce a pair with a spare path since restoration may not be needed for some kinds of upper layer protocols such as SDH. By comparing the proposed methods with existing ones in a WDM network, we show that the switching cost decreases sharply while the transmission cost is almost the same, and that our methods are effective regardless of the ratio of the number of active paths to spare paths
