Abstract :
In the last few years interest in automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems has been increasing. Several systems have been proposed employing a wide variety of location sensors, including the use of the LORAN-C radionavigation system. The LORAN-C system is described in detail and the operation of a LORAN-C receiver is explained. Receiver design is discussed, including the sources of error which must be taken into account. Special consideration is given to the differences between the land-mobile environment and the marine environment for which the LORAN system was originally designed.
