Abstract :
Humboldt State University hosted an NSF-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) during the summer of 2005 with a focus on "The Science of Design". This REU was a joint venture between the Computer Science, Mathematics and Environmental Resources Engineering Departments. Eight students from diverse backgrounds participated in the eight-week program that included an independent research project as well as group activities where students investigated design aspects of engineering, computer science and math modeling. The REU students also attended sessions aimed at building their leadership and teamwork skills. The over-arching concept of the science of design was an effective way to think about design in a multidisciplinary group
