Abstract
With the arrival of the power electronics-based new technologies applied at the transmission level, it has been intensified researches on the application of these technologies in distribution systems. The present work, whose aim is the research and development foreseeing future applications, tried to identify two aspects that can be applied to existing systems. One of them is referred to the series compensation and the other to the real power flow control. Series compensation is a well known solution used for both voltage regulation and problems linked with voltage supply balance. Nevertheless, such technology still presents aspects to be better studied so as to make of it a feasible alternative for the Expansion of the Distribution Systems. Some events, like the possibility of resonance occurrence in the network, mainly for sub-harmonic frequencies, need to be examined. A new alternative is the study and field verification of the series reactance continuous control, using power electronics-based devices. This application corresponds to one of the FACTS controllers´ concepts.
