Abstract :
Managing the evolution of the U.S. aviation system is a daunting task. The Federal Aviation Administration´s (FAA´s) Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD) at the MITRE Corporation has been working with industry and the FAA on solving problems associated with managing large systems, leveraging technology to meet operational needs, and using new system engineering management structures to solve institutional issues. This paper discusses five key principles that are guiding the system engineering activities and summarizes the efforts to date
