Abstract :
Services in service-oriented computing (SOC) are often black-box since they are typically developed by 3rd party developers and deployed only with their interface specifications. Therefore, internal details of services and implementation details of service components are not readily available. Also, services in SOC are highly evolvable since new services can be registered into repositories, and existing services maybe modified for their logic and interfaces, or they may suddenly disappear. As the first and most essential step for service management, service monitoring is to acquire useful data and information about the services and to assess various quality of service (QoS). Being able to monitor services is a strong prerequisite to effective service management. In this paper, we present a service monitoring framework for ESB-based services, as a sub-system of our Open Service Management Framework (OSMaF). We firstly define the criteria for designing QoS monitoring framework, and present the architecture and key components of the framework. Then, we illustrate the key techniques used to efficiently monitor services and compute QoS metrics. Finally, an implementation of the framework is presented to show its applicability.
