Abstract :
A number of technologies are being evaluated and further developed to provide very capable and flexible aircraft terminal area and ground navigation systems which are largely independent of aircraft facilities. These include satellite based navigation, precision FMS, forward looking sensors, and digital map/terrain databases. This paper addresses the potential for integration of these technologies for near and longer term applications on subsonic and supersonic transport aircraft. Recent McDonnell Douglas Aerospace-Transport Aircraft (MDA-TA) simulator work evaluating the capability of pilots to make Category III landings at Category I facilities using head-up display guidance symbology and emulated millimeter wave imagery will also be noted
