  • Abstract
A new sealed battery design is discussed. It is a sealed battery that incorporates a string of vented cells with a special gas recombination cell, termed the electrochemical pressure regulator, in a single sealed container. The gas recombination cell is capable of consuming oxygen and/or hydrogen. This allows the operation of flooded cells in a sealed maintenance-free battery with a fair amount of overcharge capabilities. Data on a 20 Ah, 12-volt module is presented. The operation and advantages of this new battery design versus flooded cell batteries and individually sealed cell batteries is discussed.<>
