Abstract :
The authors propose a call admission control for ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks based on a novel cell loss quality measure by which the cell loss probability of individual bursty traffic sources can be estimated. The observed individual cell loss probabilities depend not on their required cell loss probabilities but on their traffic characteristics. The quality measure, called individual virtual cell loss probability, is suitable for a call admission control and is simply calculated by only two traffic characteristic parameters-peak and mean rate. This is compared to the individual real cell loss probability obtained by simulation, and to its value averaged over all traffic sources. A call admission control based on the quality measure is described. A virtual bandwidth method that can keep individual cell loss probabilities below a specific level is developed for real-time implementation of the call admission control scheme
