Abstract :
The attempt to establish a reliable analysis for Ni(III) in nickel plates obtained during destructive physical analysis (DPA) from both nickel-cadmium and nickel-hydrogen cells has continued. The standard analysis utilizing ground plate material from the positive plates often gives unexpectedly low or even negative results for plates from discharged cells. In a previous paper an alternative procedure was reported. In that method, negative results were eliminated and more reasonable positive analyses were obtained. The work has been extended to analysis of standard materials containing Ni(III) and Ni(IV) where independent verification of those species was possible. The nature of the residual metals contained in the plate material samples has also been identified and quantified. Finally, an analytical method utilizing a basic solution procedure has been evaluated and compared to the standard acidic media procedure.<>
