The switched tone concept for speech and data transmission over land mobile channels

This paper describes a modified Single Sideband (SSB) transmission scheme, suitable for speech and data transmission over land mobile channels. The proposed system overcomes most of the deficiencies of conventional SSB while maintaining a good channel bandwidth efficiency; high quality speech transmission is achieved using a 5 kHz channel spacing. In this paper, the various modified SSB techniques are reviewed, then, the proposed concept, the switched tone (ST) concept, is introduced and evaluated along with its various subsystems.
