Abstract
The performance of several antenna types for use with telephone handsets is examined. Radiation patterns are presented for telephones when handheld and when in free space and the quarter wavelength patch antenna is found particularly attractive. Unfortunately the bandwidth is insufficient for some applications so electrical tuning is considered in those cases. The design of a band switched patch radiator to separate the transmit and receive functions for personal communication networks (PCN) is presented
