Abstract :
Upgrading strategies for B-ISDN architecture that can lead to significant reduction of network cost as well as upgradable super-multimedia services that can take advantage of such broadband network architecture to create attractive broadband services are overviewed. After discussing the evolution of a new broadband service called quasi-super-high-definition (Q-SHD) which can accommodate super-high-definition TV (S-HDTV) by using standard definition TV (STV) receivers, a new concept of auxiliary SHD (A-SHD) service is investigated. It is shown that A-SHD can contribute cost reduction of SHD video production by selectively concentrating on most informative fraction of SHD picture. The efficiencies of combined Q-SHD and A-SHD system for reducing the cost of super-multimedia terminals are discussed
