Abstract :
The characteristic of vehicle arrival at intersection is of great importance to the adjustment of signal timing, however, the vehicle arrival rate can´t be detected accurately by traditional loop detection due to technical limit. In recent years, video technology has been applied to the traffic control detection, it will bring revolutionary change to the traffic control algorithm. This study takes advantage of video technology to obtain reliable vehicle arrival rate. With the vehicle arrival pattern obtained by pattern recognition technology, the timing parameters will be calculated. The vehicle delay will be reduced by adjusting the timing parameters according to the real-time traffic flow information. At last, a simulation study is conducted for example analysis, and the simulated result shows that this approach is practical and feasible. It will offer the reliable theoretical foundation for the further study of traffic control.
