Abstract :
The authors propose a method for monitoring the performance of an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode)-based network by using operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM) cells, or monitoring cells (MCs). They also discuss procedures for estimating performance degradation measures for cell loss, cell insertion, cell transfer delay and user information errors. Based on simulation results, procedures for estimating cell loss and cell transfer delay by using an interrupted Poison process (IPP) model and a Γ-distribution model are shown. To put the proposed method into practice, the specification of the MC structure must be further discussed. The performance management system for the B-ISDN is also outlined
