Abstract :
Of all of the California State University Campuses, Cal Poly Pomona (CPUP) may be the most unique. Located near Pomona, California, it spans approximately 1400 acres of botanical gardens, the world acclaimed Arabian Horse Center and one of the largest engineering colleges in the United States. Current enrolment in the College of Engineering is over 3800. Within the college of engineering is the ocean engineering program, which offers a minor, and certificate in ocean engineering to students enrolled in the classical engineering fields. The University offers the Bachelor of Science degree in eleven fields and a Master of Science program in six fields. Although located 50 km from the ocean, the school is a member of, and utilizes facilities at the Southern California Marine Institute on Terminal Island. In addition, the Wrigley Institute of Environmental Studies, Fish Harbor, Catalina Island is used for test and evaluation of student projects. Vessel support includes the 25-meter vessels R/V Yellowfin, R/V Sea Watch and a specialized 7-meter Cuddy Craft fully instrumented for student instruction. This paper presents an overview of the Cal Poly Ocean Engineering program, its associated student research and development, industry interaction, problem areas and our future goals
