Visualization and control functions for distributed discussion systems

Due to the development of computer systems and computer networks such as the Internet, people are taking advantage of these systems for distance learning. We have been developing an advanced distance learning system called VIEW Classroom. In conventional systems communication from a lecturer to students is considered to be the most important function. Although communication from students to a lecturer is also essential, most systems ignore the importance of communication among students. Students can study through discussion among themselves. Conventional chat systems are not suitable for such purposes, since proper guidance of discussion from a lecturer cannot be realized. A lecturer has to observe and control discussions among students. For this purpose we need to develop various kinds of visualization functions for distributed discussion systems. Visualization and control functions are introduced in order to satisfy these requirements. A prototype system is developed for VIEW Classroom and the usefulness of these functions are shown
