Abstract
This paper deals with the investigation of streamer inception voltages in rape-seed oils. Earlier investigations have suggested that rape-seed oils may be used as substitutes for mineral oils in high voltage apparatus. However, streamer inception field strengths seem to be much lower. Therefore, investigations of inception field strength have been carried out in point-plane electrode configurations using needle-electrodes with defined tip radius. Shadowgraph photography techniques coupled to charge measurements have been used. A comparison between the behaviour of rape-seed oils and mineral oils regarding streamer inception is presented. Design guidelines for insulation using rape-seed oils as a substitute for mineral oils are discussed
