Abstract :
We study the performance of admission and resource control for a CDMA wireless system supporting integrated services with different traffic characteristics, quality of service (QoS) requirements, priorities and bit rates. We emphasize the effect of heavy-tailed packet data on the system characteristics. Most of the medium access control (MAC) protocols proposed for integrated services are studied for conventional Poisson traffic that do not reflect the characteristics of packet data. We show that the performance of a multiple access scheme is strongly dependent on the traffic characteristics of services
