Abstract :
A multiframe structure, which allows deployment of Edge data systems at 600 kHz, has been standardized and is known as Edge Compact. Various control and data allocation configurations are possible with Edge Compact. Some configurations are studied here and compared with Edge Classic. The best configuration of Compact appears to be with four to six PAGCH common control RLC blocks per 52-multiframe for a traffic model with Poisson arrivals and exponentially distributed packet sizes in cases of one or two carriers per sector. This was determined by simulation and confirmed with calculations for certain operating regions. It is found that the packet data bottleneck at layer two is in transaction establishment for short packets and in user data transfer for long packets
