Abstract :
This paper presents a scenario for protecting aircraft installed GPS systems from on-board portable electronic device emissions. A summary of data collected on aircraft GPS systems susceptibility from on-board and nearby external sources is presented. Included is data taken at the FAA Tech Center on a CV580 and B727 aircraft in 1997 and 1998 under the Office of Aviation Security R&D. Additional, data will be collected from commercial fleet data taken at Delta Air Lines and United Airlines in 1999 and 2000. Other potential scenarios involving aircraft ground safety and emergency service response to aircraft on ground accidents are offered. The application of the susceptibility data to these scenarios is currently under consideration within the airline community
