Abstract :
The rapid deployment in the past five years of wide-bandwidth DWDM systems has been largely enabled by the concurrent development of a wide variety of both active and passive optical components that can be manufactured in volume. The present status of these commercial components and related modules will be reviewed. Emphasis will be placed on devices key to systems being deployed in 2000, as well as devices that will enable new near-term systems. Devices for transmission, amplification, WDM/control, and switching will be described in the context of migration from 10 to 40 Gb/s and the increase in channel count from 32 to more than 80
