Abstract
An investigation into the thermal behavior of 6.6 kV crane power cable is presented. An on-line data acquisition system is installed to measure in real-time the phase currents, line voltages, cable surface temperature and air temperature while the crane is operating. Furthermore, a thermal model is constructed to analyze the temperature distribution inside the cable using FEM-software package. The computed results agree well with the measured data. It is shown that the temperature rise in cable surface caused by load current is not the determining factor in this instance, while the ambient factor such as solar radiation has a more significant influence
