Abstract :
A high quality of power is required in healthcare facilities due to increased use of microprocessor-based equipment. However, the ability to diminish power quality concerns depends on the limitations imposed by the system under study, especially infrastructure constraints. This paper describes a power quality audit conducted at a medical facility. Voltage and current measured at various points were used to assess the quality of the service from the utility as well as the condition of the hospital´s electrical system. The main power quality problem found was harmonic distortion. Measurements of the total harmonic distortion (THD) were used to locate harmonic sources. Potential problem areas were identified within the facility. A correlation was made between portable, medical equipment and power quality concerns. Recommendations are presented based on the results of the audit. This study serves as a guide for installations of new equipment and future expansions in the hospital
