  • Abstract
A model of network-based local information system has been implemented for the Nuclear Medicine department of the CNR Clinical Physiology Institute to be integrated into its large Hospital Information System (HIS) as a “functional island”. It deals with clinical, administrative and management functions. The modular project is easily replied in different environments, allowing autonomous activity for 5 laboratories placed in different locations, and 8 medical branches. A user-friendly interface allows the operators to easily navigate through the different operations of admission, reporting and consultation, provided by the system. Proper techniques ensure security and confidentiality during connections, for access to reports and essential administration data on both the local and the H.I.S. servers. Statistics computation of the clinical activity is available for subsequent health care analyses. The prototype system is under validation at the authors´ institute, and will be soon validated in other national hospital environments
