Abstract
Summary form only given. A simple cubic (SC) structure exhibiting a photonic band gap (PBG) was proposed by Sozuer and Haus (1993). Recently, Wada et al. (1997) reported a comparison between the FTIR transmission spectra of a pseudo-simple cubic lattice with theoretical transfer matrix results. The sample is composed of air rods with square and circular shaped rods made of silicon with the respective lattice constant of 0.53 mm. Phase changes are deduced from the dispersion curves and are very important for estimating the group velocity. However, the finite-size of the sample introduces a coupling between forward and backward waves that modifies both the phase and the group velocity from that expected by the band structure alone. This is clearly illustrated in our experimental data and in the simulations. A new photonic crystal of pseudo-simple cubic lattice composed of all circular air-rods was fabricated from a silicon wafer. It was constructed using a wet etching and diamond saw techniques.
