Abstract
The design of communications networks using high frequency (HF) radio faces significant difficulties. The use of HF automatic link establishment (ALE) assists in automating the operation of such networks, but ALE still encounters difficulties when the number of stations on the network is large or when network activity is high. The paper examines an Australian HF messaging network and reports on proposed improvements to the network in terms of topology and message transmission disciplines. Simulation of these improvements quantifies the increase in throughput and improvement in message delays
