Abstract :
This paper describes an approach to construct globally asynchronous locally synchronous ULSI systems. The architecture employs interface units which communicate asynchronously with each other and synchronously with locally clocked modules. Interface units feature elastic burst-mode data transfer to reduce the number of synchronizations. The architecture allows the use of different clocks in synchronous modules and makes thereby modular design possible
