Abstract
Wireless network operators are faced with the significant challenge of rapidly designing and deploying innovative value added applications in a highly competitive environment. This paper explores the prospect for a wireless network operator to use the open service access (OSA) API to provide mobile Internet applications in a UMTS network. This prospect is based on the proposition that the core network capabilities exposed by the OSA API provide added value above and beyond any capability readily available to traditional fixed line Internet service providers. The example presented in the paper illustrates that opening up the network using the set of open, flexible and extensible OSA APIs will afford the network operator
