  • Abstract
The flexibility and convenience of use offered by mobile wireless hand-held devices has opened up both new opportunities and challenges in the development of next-generation mobile network applications. One of the main opportunities lies in the development of highly customizable e-commerce applications that are not written for a specific hand-held device, but rather they have the ability to evolve in both appearance and functionality, depending upon the underlying hand-held computing platform. A significant challenge in this endeavor is both the limited processing and storage capabilities of hand-held devices, which places constraints on both the level of appearance and functionality of applications. If applications are developed to meet the functionality of the lowest hand-held computing platform, then users with diverse platforms will not be able to fully utilize the underlying computing resources available to them. In this paper, we propose a framework based on mobile agent technology to provide highly customizable e-commerce applications.
