Abstract :
We report for the first time the operation of an all-optical digital processing circuit based entirely on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). SOAs are used both for the nonlinear element in an interferometer and for the feedback amplifier. A 40 GHz all-optical shift register with inverter is demonstrated in which the feedback amplifier is also a SOA. This is a key advance since it proves the feasibility of constructing truly low latency all-optical signal processing circuits. It brings closer the prospect of performing high-speed processing ´on-the-fly´ in future photonic networks.
