Abstract
A layer two protocol for Internet protocol (IP) over WDM transport is presented. It supports operation and maintenance of wide area networks by means of dedicated messages. Its state machine for robust synchronization is described. A new layer two protocol tailored to the needs of IP over WDM transport has been presented which features OAM support for wide area networks (WANs) and robust synchronization. Bringing IP and WDM closer together it has the potential to reduce overall network cost and to simplify network management. The proof that it works as expected has been done by successful operation of a demonstrator.
