Abstract
In metro networks, explosive, unpredictable bandwidth demands continue to be the norm. Optical solutions are the best answer, but with SONET rings still ubiquitous - "all optical" architectures are still a ways off. For now, carriers need optical solutions that coexist with SONET while evolving toward more flexible - and ultimately all-optical - models.
