Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the signal processing techniques that will allow mobile users to enjoy a wide range of multimedia services. In the near future, mobile terminals will be equipped with the capability to decode and playback a variety of audio-visual formats. With the increase in number of formats and the presence of various network, terminal and user constraints, media conversion is expected to play a key role in the delivery of content to mobile users. This paper reviews some of the basic technology required for media conversion and provides some discussion about the types of services that could be supported
