Abstract :
In the paper, the problem of defining a structured methodology for the modeling and design of the control system for machining centers is addressed. In particular, it is shown how object-oriented modeling techniques can be usefully exploited for the definition of two basic reference models, one for the plant to be controlled and one for the control functions. The proposed framework includes proper hierarchical composition, formal representations, and compliance with international control standards, which are useful in the perspective of design. The paper shows the application of such concepts to an industrial large machining center for prismatic workpieces
