Abstract
High quality multilayer ceramic capacitors with BaTiO3-based dielectrics and Ni electrodes can be fired in highly reducing atmospheres when doped with certain trivalent cations. The most effective dopants are certain rare earth cations and yttrium that have been found to be capable of partially occupying both types of cation site in the perovskite lattice. The scientific principles that permit firing in reducing atmospheres while retaining a highly insulating dielectric are reviewed
