Abstract
We give an introduction to the concept of the nonlinear transfer function as a perturbation approach to assess the nonlinear transmission characteristics of a fibre-optic communication link. We show that this approach can be applied to define an equivalent single-span system for an arbitrary dispersion-managed multi-span system. This can facilitate the optimization of dispersion maps
