Abstract :
Winter storm season came early for Britons as the St Jude storm knocked out power in more than 850,000 homes and shut down rail services across the south of England in late October 2013. On 5 December the worst North Sea tidal surge since January 1953 hit eastern England, though flood defences built in response to the historic surge largely did their job.
