Abstract
Improving the energy efficiency of optical networks is becoming popular amongst researchers, as well as service and network providers. In this paper, we tackle the problem of greening optical networks under scheduled traffic model with good resource used performance in terms of the number of wavelength-links used. We propose a power-aware routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) scheme to allow operators to tune the three factors of link distance, network device power consumption, and the resource used during RWA so that we can power off or sleep the network devices during periods of low utilization. Our simulation results have shown that the proposed algorithm is effective in terms of reducing the power consumption of the network devices, as well as the tradeoff between the power consumption of the network transport and the number of wavelength-links used.
