Abstract :
A control strategy for a Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) used in electric vehicles is presented in this work. The system consists on a battery-ultracapacitor (UC) set in a semi-active capacitor configuration. In order to control the UC energy a Buck-Boost DC-DC converter is used, while the battery is passively connected to the dc-link. Based on the converter model a low level current control loop and a high level UC voltage controller were designed. The UC dynamic current reference is generated using a filter whose bandwidth is adjusted as a function of the UC state of charge. Simulation results for the complete scheme under a load profile given by the traction system are presented.
