Abstract :
Fault diagnosis of GIS switchgear is very important in order to identify the main cause of the fault in efficient manner and at lowest cost. Hence, the total loss in affected power system networks can be reduced. In this work, fault diagnosis on one of the GIS switchgear in Malaysia was performed using historical data. The historical data was obtained from the actual condition monitoring activities on the switchgear from 2008 to 2010. The data stored are the technique used to capture the data and their readings, the frequency of the fault occurrence and the actual fault cause. The technique includes ultrasound method. From diagnosis on the switchgear performed after 2010, the fault cause was identified by comparing the results obtained with the historical data that have been compiled. The switchgear was then diagnosed based on the fault cause determined from the historical data. This is an alternative method compared to experienced based technique, where the identification of the fault cause is done by experience workers. Through this technique, the identification of fault cause can be performed quickly, efficiently and with minimum error.
