Abstract :
This paper presents real-time simulation of both Type-III and Type-IV wind turbines connected to the power grid. Detailed switching models of the converter are used in conjunction with complete turbine and converter control models to evaluate the feasibility of real-time simulation using commercial real-time simulation platforms. In addition to time-domain responses, frequency-domain characteristics, such as inverter output impedance, and possible harmonic resonance as well as subsynchronous interactions with the grid are also determined and compared with offline simulation as well as experimental measurements using a scaled-down hardware to verify the ability of real-time simulation in predicting high-frequency dynamics and control instability of wind turbine converters. The developed real-time simulation models will be used to study wind turbine behavior under different and variable grid conditions, including control interactions with other power electronics devices connected to the power grid.
