Abstract :
In this paper a wide band slot antenna with a high gain and wide bandwidth is presented. The design is based on a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed hybrid slot configuration. By applying simple tapering mechanism the gain and bandwidth of an antenna reported earlier have been improved by 4dbi and 28% respectively. The design presents a gain of 5.7 dbi and a very wide bandwidth of 77% covering both of X-band and Ku-band completely. The effect of mounting this antenna on a conducting surface has also been measured. It is found that the addition of conducting backplane increases the forward gain, suppresses the backside radiation and reduces the bandwidth. Optimum value of the distance between antenna and backplane has been found for which the design presents a gain of 8.6 dbi and an impedance bandwidth of 60%. This corresponds to an improvement of 4.6dbi in gain, and 11% in bandwidth as compared to the an earlier design.
