Abstract :
The feasibility of innovative HVDC superconducting cables with extruded warm dielectric is discussed. The main features of the cold and warm dielectric configurations of superconducting cables are resumed and the effectiveness of the cold dielectric design for DC cables is pointed out. The Magnesium Diboride, a superconductor available at competitive costs, is taken for the design of the cable conductor. A warm dielectric insulation system, based on typical extruded DC-XLPE compounds, is then introduced. Possible manufacturing methods for granting a proper distribution of the electric field at the interface between the dielectric and the corrugated pipe are discussed. The layouts of the cooling system, the terminations and the joints are also addressed.
