Abstract
In this paper we discuss and propose the methodology for optimization of optical fibers that supports the space division multiplexing (SDM). The optimum refractive index profile that would minimize mode dispersion for few mode optical fibers (FMF) could be highly beneficial for SDM applications; herewith we discuss the refractive-index profile synthesis of FMF based on the use of inverse scattering theory. As for the multicore optical fibers (MCF), we propose the alignment of the fiber cores based on methodology resembling the optimum signal constellation design in multilevel modulation formats.
