Abstract
We have recently demonstrated a novel type of microstructured nanomechanical optical fibres with optical properties that can be continuously tuned by mechanical actuation, similar to chip-based MEMS optical couplers. We review different options for actuation, such as gas pressure, temperature, and electrostatic forces, and discuss progress in the fabrication and experimental demonstration of these fibres.
