Abstract
The poor state of most asphalt roads in Nigeria has significantly increased the number of road accidents, leading to loss of lives and properties. These road defects can be observed in the form of pavement cracks, rutting, road bumps and potholes. Prior detection of these defects, particularly potholes, which is more prevalent in Nigeria and effective communication among drivers, could contribute significantly to reducing road accidents in the country. This paradigm approach is gaining recent attention in the area of Vehicular Adhoc Network Technology (VANET), and it is the aim of this paper to survey existing works, with emphasis on pothole road defect detection using Image processing techniques. As part of an on-going research, the strengths and limitations of these image processing methods are highlighted with specific areas for improvement identified.
